Explore Botswana Wilderness and Wildlife in 11 Day Tour ( Okavango (Moremi) and Chobe)
Day 1 We meet at Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Botswana. This is about a 2 hour drive from the border with South Africa. You can explore the reserve looking for rhino and we will chat about the trip as well as answer any questions. If you need help with setting up your tent etc we will gladly assist. A good place also to test your vehicle and it’s 4×4.
Day 2 We drive up to Makgadigadi game reserve using the ferry if the river is to high to access the park. The drive from the camp along the river is stunning with herds of red hartebeest, zebra, wildebeest and elephant congregating there before the rains come. This area area never disappoints.
Day 3 Today we head into Central Kalahari Game Reserve. First we have to re cross the river and then refuel. The drive to the gate can have thick sand but the track gets more interesting once inside the park. The camp sites have a long drop toilet and a shower enclosure with a bucket. We can have lion and leopard in the camp here, especially at the ablutions. We will probably have a sundowner on the pan before dinner. The Central Kalahari Game reserve was made famous in a book “Cry of the Kalahari” by Mark and Dehlia Owens. It is a semi arid area dotted with flat pans. The pans make for great game spotting and it is often possible to see predators on them.
Day 4 Leisurely day exploring the pans and surrounding areas. We should see oryx, eland, red hartebeest, ostrich, springbok etc.
Day 5 Today we leave for Moremi. We will restock in Maun and spend the night just over the buffalo fence so we can be in the park first thing in the morning. There are no fences between us and the park and we have experienced lion, hyena, elephant etc in this camp. A community camp with hot showers and toilets open to the stars.
Day 6 Early off to South Gate to check in. From here we usually explore the Black pools area which is also rich in bird life before we head off to Third Bridge. We drive through beautiful open plains and then reach Black Pools which is a series of pools stretching for some distance with abundant bird life and animals reliant on water. Lots of hippo and crocs also.
Day 7 Third Bridge has large trees and is a lovely place to relax and do the drives around. If possible we will drive to dead tree island but it is often blocked by water. The sand can be quite deep but this is not a major problem, water over the roads, that is a bigger problem because you have no idea how deep it is.
Day 8 Long drive today to camp at Khwai after leaving the park through North Gate. Lovely camp on the banks of the Khwai river. Possibly the camp with the most animal visitors day and night. This is always a high light.
Day 9 From here we head to Savuti which can be through thick sand. This trip can be relatively quick or slow depending on the road conditions.
Day 10 Explore Savuti area. Famous for it’s lion and huge wide open areas. Elephant are here in large numbers as well
Day 11 Another day in Savuti
Day 12. The long drive back to Maun and the end of the trip where we have to say goodbye
